Concrete Materials, Types and Uses in Construction

Concrete is a compound material made up of cement, water, and aggregate. When the various materials of concrete is mixed with each other, a fluid mass of concrete is obtained and can be poured into different moulds to get  specific desired shapes. The concrete hardens with time by reacting chermically with other compounds.

  • Cement
  • Water
  • Coarse aggregates and/or fine aggregates

The mixture of the materials should be maintained in a correct proportions, specifically the water and cement ratio. When the water cement ratio increases, the strength of the final product will decreased. Concrete resists compression, is flexible to get multiple shapes and reinforced concrete is resistant to the tensile stress as well.

  • Plain or ordinary concrete
  • Reinforced concrete
  • Lightweight concrete
  • High density concrete
  • Precast concrete
  • Prestressed concrete
  • Glass reinforced concrete
  • Air-entrained concrete
